Fall Creek Orchard:

The Fall Creek Orchard was awarded its GreenSpace grant through Keep Indianapolis Beautiful in 2017 and the space was designed and implemented in 2018.  The vision for the orchard/edible corridor was brought about by a local neighbor and science teacher who used the trail on a regular basis.  On one of his walks, he noticed a large grove of American Wild Plum trees being smothered by invasive plant species, yet still producing fruit.  Seeing this sparked the thought of how cool it might be to remove the invasive plant species, open up the views to the river, and create a corridor filled with fruiting trees and shrubs which passers-by could harvest on their walks down the trail.

KIB, the Indy Department of Public Works, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and the Marion County Soil and Water Conservation District all found value in this project and helped to provide support.  This support included cost-share funding for plant material, helping to organize and participate in volunteer workdays, and technical guidance in designing and planting locations.  This project has since been featured in the online publication "Indy AgriNews" and can be found at the following link:
